We all know that education in South Africa is a big problem, coupled with hard to access libraries in certain areas of South Africa the solution seems simple, provide internet to the masses. Often it unsafe for people to attend libraries and other institutes after work/study hours at night. The initiative is also powered by how small businesses in rural areas rely on internet to conduct business, so this project will help small business with growth, expansion and retention. Internet has also become a privilege only to South Africans that can afford it, this will help even the playing ground so to speak.
The Neotel WIFI internet access project plans to provide for 348 wards. A user gets 300mb of data to use on their first month and 250mb of data from then on per month. Users also get unlimited access to .gov.za sites which is full of publications and services people can access when they normally couldn’t without this project.
This will provide people with access to jobs, becoming internet savvy which is increasingly necessary in the competitive work environment. Anyone has access to this service provided they have a device equipped with internet access and wifi enabled.
Phase 1 has been implemented (2015/2016) that provided 50 hotspots. In 2016/2017 they plan to launch another 50 hotspots and the other 234 hotspots will be installed during the 2017/2018 period.
The wifi spots will be mounted on the external walls of building and will point towards the nearby community. The hotspots have a reach of 200m. If a user has reached their cap for the month, topping up data has never been as affordable, a user could top up in the following means:
R5 for a day of internet access (limited to 700MB per day).
R15 for a week of internet access (limited to 2GB for 7 days).
R45 for a month of internet access (limited to 5GB for 30 days).

CAPE TOWN – About 72 public access WiFi hotspots have gone live across the Cape this week. This initiative have reached over 180,000 citizens so far.
